Who likes Cherry Garcia Ice Cream? There is just something about that combination of cherries and chocolate that makes me go gaga. Some combinations are just meant to be, like: chocolate and strawberries, chocolate and peanut butter, chocolate and coconut...well you get the picture. I think chocolate pretty much goes with anything.
I’m a bit of a chocoholic. I grew up having chocolate milk for breakfast every morning. It was the powdered Nesquik but still so delicious and of course half the fun was stirring and stirring until it was fully mixed - the sound of the spoon banging off the inside of the glass was like nails on the chalkboard for my dad…”can’t you stir quietly?”...yeah, um no. I really can’t.
Fast forward to my pregnancy 7 years ago. I lost all appetite for any meat proteins. I couldn’t even be in the same room as someone eating chicken or beef. For 6-7 months I kept myself alive with eggo waffles and “shakes” I made in my magic bullet with chocolate soy or almond milk and strawberries. Nothing fancy but for some reason adding some fruit to the chocolatey mixture made me feel better.
Well, my daughter now loves chocolate milk but she calls it “gulk” and it is almost like an opiate for her - she craves it and will binge drink it. Instead of constantly battling her, I’m attempting to blend the milk with extra ingredients without diluting the chocolate taste. She needs the calories and she needs as many nutrients as we can get into her.
Tonight, I’m blending cherries, chocolate almond milk and bananas and topping with a sprinkle of coconut and a couple semi-sweet chocolate chips. This drink is a rich and satisfying treat.
