Happy July 4th to all my American friends.
Coffee and Smoothies – probably my two favourite things in this world aside from my husband and daughter. I know it is a signal of a bigger problem but if I don’t have a coffee in the morning I just can’t function and always seem to get a caffeine headache. Not that the caffeine does a whole lot to keep me awake and alert. I could drink coffee at midnight and be asleep at 12:01.
This morning, I was both hungry and in desperate need of some caffeine. Why not hit two birds with one stone? My first coffee smoothie experiment went well so decided there wasn’t too much risk to trying again.
This time, I started out by combining equal parts Greek Vanilla Yogurt and milk with ice and hazelnut flavoured instant coffee. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t crazy about it and it really felt like something was missing or perhaps I added too much instant coffee. Not one to give up, I added half a banana that I had ripening on the counter in preparation for smoothies – I always have bananas on hand and usually cut them up and freeze them so they can be quickly added to smoothies. I didn’t have any frozen but the addition of the fresh banana was a welcome one. The smoothie was just that…smooth and barely any banana flavour. Good balance between the coffee, vanilla yogurt and banana. Enjoyed this as much, if not more, than an Ice Cap from Tim Hortons. Probably shouldn’t be thinking that, let alone writing that, as I’m likely to get kicked out of Canada for that comment.
This will be getting added to my morning routine. The best part? Not having to actually make a coffee and wait for it to be cooled in order to make the smoothie. This is one breakfast that won’t be slowing me down in the morning.
