I have such good memories of eating grapefruit for the first time. I was about 6 years old and we travelled to Florida for March break for the very first time. Travelling to Florida is a very popular winter destination for Canadians - we like to escape the cold for however long we can whenever we can. We were staying with my cousins' grandparents and I remember having 1/2 a grapefruit put in front of me for breakfast (that was along with toast with tomato jam...That is a whole other story). They also had those funny little grapefruit spoons that help you make quick work of removing the individual sections. It was love at first bite but then again, that could have been due to the sprinkling of sugar on top.
I haven't had a grapefruit in months but they looked so good at the store this weekend that I couldn't resist. Plus, I've never, ever had one in a smoothie which is kind of mind boggling considering how often I use other citrus fruits. I wasn't trying to mask the taste of the grapefruit and I was also curious to see if I could make this "snack" grapefruit smoothie without adding any additional liquid. I'm calling this a snack smoothie as it doesn't have a protein kick coming from yogurt, dairy or protein powder so I wouldn't consider this to be a meal replacement but it is a fun and tasty way to get some additional Vitamin C.
Thing of Beauty
Check out this colour. It is truly a beautiful orange colour that I don't think can be done justice in a photograph. This next photo shows how wonderful the grapefruit blended before I had added the rest of the fruit. Remember, no added liquid except for a small amount of lime juice.
I can't adequately describe the taste of this smoothie. It alternated between sweet and a bit sour which is only highlighted by the small amount of honey and lime. Truly a light smoothie that I would put at the top of the list. Usually I will try a smoothie with and without added protein and in this case I'd be afraid to add anything to this smoothie that might change the delicate balance of sweet and tang. Its just too good to mess with.
